I’ve done it (booked on the toll free number) while standing in the lobby. One time I walked in, asked if they had rooms available, and got their rate. Then called and walked back up saying “ok now I have a reservation.” The clerk would look puzzled, and I would try to explain. Not sure why they make you jump through those hoops. Doing it online is never a problem, but their toll free# was very busy when I called once late at night on a holiday weekend.
